As part of our warehousing services, we operate a customs warehouse (bonded warehouse), allowing non-Union goods to be stored under customs supervision without the immediate payment of import duties. This provides greater flexibility for businesses involved in international trade that do not wish to release goods into free circulation immediately.
A bonded warehouse is a storage facility where goods are kept under customs supervision. In the Netherlands, this corresponds to the customs warehouse procedure (douane-entrepot). Under this arrangement, non-Union goods can be stored in customs-approved facilities without the immediate payment of import duties and other customs charges. The goods remain under customs supervision until they are placed under another customs procedure, exported, or otherwise cleared.
One of the main advantages of a bonded warehouse is that import duties are not payable when goods enter storage. Duties only become due when the goods are released for free circulation within the European Union. If the goods are re-exported directly from the bonded warehouse, import duties can often be avoided altogether. Depending on the situation, import VAT may also be deferred through the Dutch Article 23 VAT deferment scheme. This means that import VAT does not have to be paid at the time of import but can instead be accounted for in the VAT return.
